So It Begins!

To those who care to listen,

As the once derided concept of immediate globally shared knowledge develops into a convention, we have discovered that amusing, active, artistic involvement can be visited upon an unsuspecting public virally via the Internet. You are hereby cordially invited to accept exclusive membership in a secretive and enigmatic tradition that dates back to the oughts, a project that will be hereto referred as “The Two Dollar Tattoo”.

The point of this venture is to challenge the tattoo community! Commencing in the month of February in Canada (with a little Canadiana–the toonie), artists will be expected to dare each other to take the challenge of creating unique works of tattoo art executed with only a single needle (as in single-needle configuration). Line-work, shading, colour…all must be executed with the same needle! The size of the final product will be expected to fill the space of a "toonie", a Canadian two-dollar coin (approximately 28mm or 1 1/8” in diameter). The artist should utilize all of the space within the circle. This is expected to be both a game of camaraderie as well as a professional courtesy for artists and industry people. In the original spirit of the event we request that the only monetary exchange for the tattoo is to be a shiny Canadian $2 coin but really charge what you feel is appropriate if you are not tattooing a fellow industry professional. A $2 should used for sizing of the drawing and final stencil, and MUST be utilized as original proof of compliance with the set parameters.

Submissions will require, at the very least, photos of the drawing or stencil, a picture of the completed tattoo with the toonie in the frame to depict scale, and a photo of the tattoo artist and the happy recipient exchanging the payment of the toonie. Any other documentation of the process is good, such as photos of the actual procedure and, hey, even a healed photo of the tattoo is a bonus and always encouraged and appreciated.

Submissions can be made online via e-mail to Please insure the aforementioned images are:
  • Your own original tattoo work, flash is permitted but the tattoo must be by you
  • Image must be In-Focus!
  • The files as big and crisp as you can send them. A minimum of 800x600 pixels is appreciated. (please don't use your cell phone use a real camera).
  • Images un-marked or altered, we will watermark them for you.
  • The names of the artist and recipient of the work.
  • The name of the shop where the tattooing took place (shop URL etc.), and any other points of interest.
There are also plans in the works to offer monthly prizes to winners of the best toonie sized tattoo (judged solely by us… The Ittee Bittee Tattoo Committee). The winning prize may take the form of a little frame with your name and a “thank you for participating” (you can then write home and brag that you did the best little big tattoo) Or maybe a t-shirt. We are open to offers of sponsorship, prizes, book publishing deals etc. as this project builds a little steam. The official contest will begin when a sufficient number of contenders join in on the competition and the ittee bittee tattoo committee says so!

If anyone does not have access to a “toonie” (Ie. you live outside of Canada, or you just a broke-ass) you are still eligible. You just need to mail us a business card (and or a shop t-shirt any size will do but most of us are of the size XL variety.) and we will mail you a “toonie”.
